Life Among the Apaches
John Cremony’s accounts of his personal experiences, conflicts and close calls were the stuff of action adventure worthy of an epic movie. Cremony (1815-1879) met the Apaches first as an enemy but became their greatest advocate. His opportunity to observe them closely was unique. It may have been the only time near the peak of their powers that a white man could have survived within their territory long enough to get to know them. Cremony recognized their primitive virtues as well as their savage flaws. He never idealized them but he admired and respected them as enemies and eventually as friends. He was uniquely qualified by disposition to do so and write about his experiences among the Apache people before guns and government overwhelmed them. It seems unlikely that anything as accurate has been written about the Apache character and way of life. His observations confirm the extraordinary quality of their horsemanship, stealth, stamina, and ferocity.

The Log of a Cowboy
The Log of a Cowboy is an account of a five-month drive of 3,000 cattle from Brownsville, Texas, to Montana in 1882 along the Great Western Cattle Trail. Although the book is fiction, it is firmly based on Adams's own experiences on the trail, and it is considered by many to be the best account of cowboy life in literature. Adams was disgusted by the unrealistic cowboy fiction being published in his day; The Log of a Cowboy was his response. It is still in print, and even modern reviewers consider it a compelling classic. The Chicago Herald said: "As a narrative of cowboy life, Andy Adams' book is clearly the real thing. It carries its own certificate of authentic first-hand experience on every page."

The Thunder Bird
Since Life is no more than a series of achievements and failures, this story is going to begin exactly where the teller of tales usually stops. It is going to begin with Johnny Jewel an accepted lover and with one of his dearest ambitions realized. It is going to begin there because Johnny himself was just beginning to climb, and the top of his desires was still a long way off, and the higher you go the harder is the climbing. Even love does not rest at peace with the slipping on of the engagement ring. I leave it to Life, the supreme judge, to bear me out in the statement that Love must straightway gird himself for a life struggle when he has passed the flowered gateway of a woman's tremulous yes.

Gunman's Reckonning
"It was time then for action, and Lefty Joe prepared for the descent into the home of the enemy. Let it not be thought that he approached this moment with a fallen heart, and with a cringing, snaky feeling as a man might be expected to feel when he approached to murder a sleeping foeman. For that was not Lefty's emotion at all. Rather he was overcome by a tremendous happiness. He could have sung with joy at the thought that he was about to rid himself of this pest."
